What an unmitigated disaster! Even Jimmy's bowling was nowhere near his usual standard and, as Henry said, only highlight was Broad & Swann.

Key (and/or Ramps) is the key

Get rid of Bopara, I don't care if he got three test centuries against the West Indies - it's the cricketing equivalent to scoring a hat-trick against Airbus UK.

To be fair Bopara is not a number 3 batsman, should be playing lower the order.
Get rid of Bell, he had his chance and bottled it. Couldn't care if he's the best technical batsman in the world but he can't even buy time on the crease.

Agree with both points Henry, Bell should never have been brought back in the first place, as we both stated long before the 4th test debacle. Bopara shouldn't be a number 3 but i'm not convinced he should be there at all, same with Cook, i would like to see some other players given a chance.
Too late for Ramps imo and he is part of the been there, tried that and it failed brigade anyway but the likes of Trott, Key or perhaps someone like Joyce or Shah should be in there and eventually Denly should be opening the batting as well. Oh and Pietersen needs to stop being a wanker and play at 3 - I don't care if it's not your favourite position Kevin, you are our only world class middle order batsman and should be in at 3.

Should've gone with what we know. Trott making his test debut in an Ashes decider. deary me.
I'd have liked to see us make one last ditch attempt at getting Tresco back just for this game and this game only. If that works we put Cook at 3 and move Bopara further up.

Since Trott has piled on the runs in the County Championship, the Aussies won't have a specific plan to get Trott out and he'll go on to make a test century.

Bell has piled on the runs in the Championship. Ramps has an average of 94 over all his time playing, on his home ground. It seemed a no brainer to me.
At least this time next week i can form the opinion that the selectors should resign. Especially Giles.

Playing Bell in the Edgbaston test seemed a good idea but he failed to make use of the opportunity and threw his wicket at Headingley, twice.
IMO the selectors are getting more consistent with the squad selection. Graham Onions has been knocking on the door and he's justified his place in the squad while Bopara has been given a chance in the test squad. Monty Panesar has finally been dropped and Graeme Swann is finally in the test team. Tim Bresnan has got rewarded a place in the test team Adil Rashid is getting looked after well and not getting rushed. The Lions squad is evolving all the time and is a good platform to get into the England squad.

Fair point about consistency on the whole. But theres hardly a barrage of players knocking on the door?
Selectors are waiting til after the ashes to start over with the number 3 spot.
If Trott does well, it'll be his,if not it puts the obvious two clowns and Key back in the frame.
Also, if someone like David Sales was at a more 'attractive' county, he'd have been picked at 3 a couple of years ago.

Broad signalled his arrival as a very good international cricketer today. What a spell of bowling!

Decided to pop over to Headingley and watch the final session of Yorks-Lancs. Left the house with England 89-3, arrived at Headingley to find the members stand in raptures but no Yorks or Lancs players to be seen. Only to discover that Australia were 111-7 What a devastating spell by Stewie Broad! Flintoffs Ashes? More like Broads Ashes as he takes his momentum from the Headingley test into The Oval. Wonder if Stewie will post a ton in Englands 2nd innings?

Never mind that how's the Yorks - Lancs game going? Bore draw, half of yesterday gone to the rain but can't complain with Yorkshires performance. Just need the higher order to put on huge scores and Yorkshire should avoid the drop.

Just need someone other than Australia to win the ICC Champions Trophy and ICC World Cup and we can safely say RIP to the dominance of Australia Cricket.
The greatest achievement of England winning The Ashes is that both teams are in transition mode and England have come out on top. Phil Hughes and Mitchell Johnson were tipped to become a success in England but they failed to turn up. New stars have emerged in the England ranks - Graham Onions has had a fine year, Stewie Broad is improving each series and Graeme Swann has re-emerged.
All is needed is for Alistair Cook to go on one purple patch, the no3 batsman position to be resolved and England will return as a no2 test nation and to go one better. Another pleasing aspect is unlike the 05 Ashes winning squad, the 09 Ashes winning squad will be around for another 3-4 years and any players knocking on retirement will be gradually replaced with up and coming youngsters in the county circuit.

All is needed is for Alistair Cook to go on one purple patch, No, we need to replace Cook, he has failed too many times. Personally I would go for Denly but then as I have said before, I'm biased! the no3 batsman position to be resolved Hell yeh but problem is I can't see an obvious solution at the moment. Bell has secured it for the time being but give it a year/18 months and he will be gone after numerous failures, when will we learn! Hopefully by then a promising youngster will have emerged and the selectors take a chance or Pietersen's ego will deflate and he can be moved to 3. and England will return as a no2 test nation and to go one better. Another pleasing aspect is unlike the 05 Ashes winning squad, the 09 Ashes winning squad will be around for another 3-4 years and any players knocking on retirement will be gradually replaced with up and coming youngsters in the county circuit. Yes, it was a superb win but I still want us to win the Ashes down under. Until then we can't claim to be better than the Aussies. Last 4 series - we have scraped our 2 home series, they have arse raped us in their two home series. We definitely can rise above them but aren't there yet.
