I've not been around but for what its worth here's my opinion on the Keegan thing.
An appalling appointment and I'm hearing today that they're giving Dennis Wise a job too. This will not work, things have moved on so much since Keegan was last in post there and what everyone neglects to mention is that he blew a 12 point lead that season that everyone goes on about.
There were 2 games in particular that they lost after being in front, 4-3 at Liverpool after being 3-2 up and 1-2 at Blackburn after being 0-1 up. In both of these games every manager worth his salt would have shut up shop and played out the game protecting their lead instead of imbecilically trying to score more and leaving themselves open.
The game is now far more tactically sophisticated than last time round, I personally don't give him a prayer.

Midfielder Joey Barton is on the bench for Newcastle United’s Premiership clash at Arsenal on Tuesday night.
The 25-year-old England international, currently out on bail and awaiting trial over an alleged incident in Liverpool last month, has been called on to as Toon boss Kevin Keegan struggles for numbers.
Keegan told the club’s official website: "Joey is in the squad for the Arsenal game and will start on the bench.
"We are very low on numbers at the minute and we might need Joey and I'd have no problems with bringing him on.
"He is now based in Newcastle which is a real bonus.
"There are still bail restrictions in place but he can now train and play.
"He has worked really hard in training and I do believe that we will make a plus out of a minus.
"It's not been a good time for him but if we can draw a line under this we can turn this into a positive."
Meanwhile, Damien Duff believes the Tynesiders are improving under new boss Keegan.
"Things are definitely improving here with a new manager," said the Irish winger.

Brazilian defender Alvaro has confirmed that he is set to undergo a medical over a move to Newcastle United from Levante.
According to reports, The Toon will sign the centre-back on a three-year contract as Kevin Keegan is keen to bolster the Tynesiders’ defence.
Alvaro is quoted as saying on setantasports.com: "I will pass the medical tests today and, if everything goes well, I will sign my new contract with Newcastle.
"I am very pleased with the opportunity to play in England.
"At other times, offers from The Premier League came up but were never finalised.
"Newcastle are an historic club and I am going to work to help them do everything they can.
"I know that they are not doing well in the table but, in both the last two years, I have been fighting with Levante to stay up so I am used to battling."

Newcastle defender David Rozehnal has joined Lazio on loan until the end of the season.
The Premier League club this evening confirmed on their website that the Czech Republic international, who only arrived at St James' Park in the summer, will spend the remainder of the campaign with the Serie A club.
Rozehnal, 27, has been a regular for the Magpies, making 21 appearances this season.
The defender has been deployed mainly in midfield since Kevin Keegan's arrival, with Steven Taylor and Claudio Cacapa preferred in central defence.
'The offer came shortly before the deadline, but we managed to finish the deal,' said his agent Pavel Ziko.
Rozehnal is expected to move permanently in the summer.

Newcastle United striker Michael Owen has insisted that the squad are working hard to reverse their poor form this season.
Even though Kevin Keegan returned to the squad as the clubs manager the Magpies have failed to give a consistent performance in the Premier League.
Owen scored the opening goal in Newcastle's 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough on Sunday, with Robert Huth equalising late in the match to deny Kevin Keegan his first win with The Magpies since his return.
Owen admitted that the clubs form wont change at once but said that the players in the squad had plenty of potential in them and they should work collectively to improve the standings of the club.
"You cannot wave a magic wand because there is a lot of work to do," Owen said in the News of the World.
"Kevin is a great manager and there is no doubt in my mind something exciting will be built here.
"He will give everyone a spark. Obviously it's hard to become confident when you are playing Arsenal twice in such a short space of time.
"Results have not been as good as they should have been and we are disappointed with our position in the Premier League.
"With the players we have, we are better than our league position suggests - and we will turn it round sooner rather than later.
"While some of the lads may be struggling for confidence at the moment, one of his great strengths is getting the best out of players."

I have a feeling that Newcastle will finish only a few points above the relegation places this season and that the expected upturn in fortunes will fail to materialise completely.

With Tottenham Hotspur linked with unsettled Charles N'Zogbia last month and more interest from other continental sides likely to be centred on him come the summer, Newcastle United boss Kevin Keegan has declared that he will do everything to keep the young winger at St James’ Park.
The talented 21-year-old, who can also operate at left-back position, has been a revelation for the Magpies this season but Keegan feels that the Frenchman is ‘not that happy’ at the Tyneside club.
"Charles came to see me about all the speculation, and I very honestly said 'I've had no inquiries about you'," Keegan said on the club’s official website.
"He's just signed a new contract here, but it's something we'll have to revisit again in the summer, because the signs are that he's not that happy here.
"But this is a big club, and we've got two or three months to work with him."

Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi has been given the message loud and clear that he either “make the breakthrough quite quickly, or look at somewhere else where he can do it.”
The Toon boss Kevin Keegan is making his plans in re-establishing the Tynesiders as one of the powerhouses of England, and is keen to bring in top names to St James’ Park.
As such, he has held talk with the likes of Ameobi, who has failed to produce goals for the Black-Whites in 16 months due to injury and bad form, in order to fire up the 26-year-old and also promised to help him get on the top of his game.
"I've already sat with Shola and told him what I think,” Keegan said in the Sunderland Echo.
"There's a danger with somebody like Shola Ameobi that when you sit in a room with him, you think he's just a young lad.
"But he's 26 now, so he's either got to make the breakthrough quite quickly, or look at somewhere else where he can do it.
"My intention is to work with him and help him, and because he's a forward, it's right in my area of expertise. That's where I played, and I know what it's like and how tough it is.
"I don't know what it's like to be 6ft 3in, that's for sure, but there's a better player in Shola than we've seen at the moment."

Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan has revealed plans to get into contract talks with striker Michael Owen.
The 28-year-old England international’s existing contract at St James' Park runs out next summer, but he has been linked with a move to Manchester City, where former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson is a keen admirer of Owen’s talent.
However, Keegan is keen to see Owen flourishing at the Tyneside club and has even made him the Toon captain to give him confidence.
"It goes without saying that I want him to stay. We have to sit down with Michael at some stage,” Keegan is quoted as saying on skysports.com.
"It is something we need to discuss. How long is left on his contract will make it an issue."
Former Liverpool ace, Owen has had his problems with injuries and is yet to show his best form in a Toon shirt. However, he has now got two goals in as many games for the Magpies but Keegan is still looking for a better performance from the former Real Madrid player.
"Newcastle fans have not seen enough of Michael because of things beyond his control," Keegan added.
"He has never had a run of games. The first stage is getting the games under his belt."

As I have said before all the hullabullo surrounding the Keegan appointment is bullpoo and the fans are only deceiving themselves.

Duff issues warning to Newcastle Duff has struggled for form like the rest of team-mates Newcastle winger Damien Duff says the club will face a relegation battle unless their results start to improve. The Magpies have taken just two points from a possible 12 since Kevin Keegan took over as manager and are just six points off the relegation places.
"We are in a fight. Relegation hasn't been mentioned in team-talks because we are trying to stay positive.
"But anyone who has got half a brain can see we need to pick up points, and the sooner the better," said Duff.
Interview: Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan
Newcastle, who were beaten 4-1 by Aston Villa on Saturday, last won a Premier League game on 15 December when they beat Fulham under former boss Sam Allardyce.
606: DEBATE Can Newcastle avoid getting sucked into a relegation battle?
Their next match is on 23 February against Manchester United, who recently beat them 6-0 at Old Trafford.
"We have got a lot of work to do," added Duff. "We are way off what Newcastle United expects.
"It's probably a good thing we haven't got a game as it gives us two weeks to work on the training ground."
Keegan has admitted the club are precariously placed and has targeted the 40-point mark that should be enough to avoid the drop.
"We are fragile," he said after the loss to Villa. "I believe we have enough to be a Premier League club next season but I'm under no illusions that we need to get to the 40-point mark.
"I have a big challenge. It's not a case of me coming in and waving a magic wand but it's down to me to solve it."
He added: "These players have taken a lot of knocks. We need spirit and togetherness."

Needless to say, as harsh as this may sound, I would somewhat wee myself if Newcastle got relegated.. as I just think it'd serve them right.
Big Sam asked for 5 years, they barely gave him a quarter of that time! It would serve the chairman right for giving in to his fans knee jerk reactions rather than putting the trust and faith in Big Sam.

Newcastle United’s slump is now clearly reached worrying stage as there is a danger of the Tynesiders getting sucked into the relegation battle, as such defender Steven Taylor has called upon his team-mates to get their acts together soon.
The Toon have not won in the Premiership since their triumph against Fulham in mid-December, and currently find themselves in the 13th place where they are only six points above the relegation zone with games against Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers and Liverpool coming up.
"We've got to dig ourselves out of a hole and the only way we are going to do that is if we stick together," the England U-21 captain said in the Telegraph.
"We can't afford to feel sorry for ourselves. In fact, that's probably the worst thing we can do because we haven't got a game for two weeks.
"Only we can sort this out and we've got to take a long hard look at ourselves on the training ground in the next couple of weeks to put this right. We' ve got to improve, it's as simple as that."

Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton will not have any action taken against him following an incident involving Aston Villa's Shaun Maloney on Saturday. It was alleged that Barton threw a punch at the Scottish forward during his side's 4-1 defeat at Villa Park.
But after studying video evidence, the Football Association has cleared the 25-year-old of any wrongdoing.
Barton only recently returned to action having spent a week in prison after being charged with assault and affray.

Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan has played down the comparisons between Charles N’Zogbia and former Toon left-winger, David Ginola.
N’Zogbia has been in an impressive form, but has also had to play in a left-back role. And there is speculation that Arsenal and Tottenham are interested in the 21-year-old.
Nevertheless, Keegan, who is aiming to convince N’Zogbia that he has a future at St James’ Park, feels the France U-21 international winger can go on to be become even better player as he is so young.
Keegan said in The Journal: “Charles N’Zogbia has been compared to David Ginola, but Ginola was 29 when he came, he was very experienced. The reason he came was because he was guilty of giving the ball away on the halfway line and the other team scored and knocked France out of the World Cup.
“He was never forgiven for that by the French people so we brought him to Newcastle.
“I think Charlie’s got a lot of ability but it’s off the cuff at the moment, he’s still learning the game, but you expect that from someone so young. He’s only 21 and he hasn’t got David’s experience yet.”
However, Keegan is also prepared if N’Zogbia wants to leave in the summer with the player himself wanting to move to London, where his family lives.
Keegan said: “Rest assured we will do what we can, but if he says he doesn’t want to be here, we have to accept that and bring someone better in.”

Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan has said that Shay Given and Steve Harper are the best pair of goalkeepers in the Premier League.
Given & Harper have been at the Toon from 1997 and 1993 respectively and have had a healthy competition for the No.1 jersey with the former being the first-choice. The Republic of Ireland international however had to be replaced with a groin problem in the last game and Harper came on as the substitute in the 4-1 loss at Aston Villa.
"We have got the best pair of goalkeepers in the Premier League, I honestly believe that," Keegan said on the club’s official website.
"I don't know every goalie but I have either worked with or come up against a lot of them.
"Remember, I signed Steve Harper. The first day I met him I liked him and I like him just as much now and he will get his chance.
"But, of course, Shay Given is a terrific keeper.
"I've been so impressed with the pair of them and we've also got some very good young goalkeepers.
"Fraser Forster is learning from the pair of them and we have just signed another young lad from Sweden (Ole Soderberg).
"Goalkeeper wise we are blessed at the moment.
"Shay probably has the edge in terms of experience because he's played so many games, not just for Newcastle but for Republic of Ireland as well.
"But everyone, like goalkeeper coach Paul Barron, is amazed at how good Steve Harper is and we really are lucky to have two great goalies."

Newcastle United boss Kevin Keegan is keen to see his side make themselves safe in the Premiership table before looking to bring in new players in the summer, but reports have claimed that he is in the hunt for a trio of league stars.
The Magpies are currently 13th in the Premiership and have 12 games left in the season to get themselves a decent finish, but their appalling form has prompted the talk of relegation battle.
Keegan, who is yet to taste a win after taking charge of the Toon last month, told Newcastle World TV: "First we have to get the players to ensure our safety, because we're not safe yet. We need a win. That's all we lack at the moment."
According to today's Sun newspaper, Keegan has made a wishlist that has Manchester United defender Wes Brown, Chelsea left-back Wayne Bridge and West Ham United striker Dean Ashton, on it as the targets for summer transfer market.
Without going into the details, Keegan added: "There are players we are looking to in terms of thinking can we get a wish list and can we get people to go and watch them?."

Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan is not sure whether Obafemi Martins will be fit in time for Saturday’s Premiership clash against Manchester United at St James's Park, but goalkeeper Shay Given is upbeat about his chances.
Nigerian striker Martins returned after the African Nations Cup with an ankle problem.
"Oba's looking doubtful for Saturday, if I'm honest, but I wouldn't rule him out yet," Keegan said in the Echo.
Given suffered a groin injury against Aston Villa; the Toon boss added: "Shay still has a chance, and we'll know more later in the week. Shay still thinks he has a chance of being fit.”

Needing a big performance from his side, Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan wants his players to believe that they can beat defending champions Manchester United in Saturday’s Premiership game at St James’ Park.
The Toon are currently placed 13th in the league table, just six points above the relegation zone and Keegan is looking for a better performance from his side in the remainder of the season to finish at a decent position.
On the other hand, the Red Devils have been stunned in their last league outing by city rivals Manchester City. However, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side have beaten Arsenal in the FA Cup to wipe off the disappointment, and are facing Lyon in the first leg tonight in the Champions League in France.
"It's a big ask to beat Man Utd but it is possible," Keegan told Newcastle World TV.
"They will have had two big games by the time we play them.
"There was the Arsenal FA Cup game and then they've got Lyon in the Champions League and there are a lot of things which could happen.
"But one thing is for sure, they will come with a strong squad wanting three points because of the setback in last weekend's derby (beaten 2-0 by Man City).
"I know they have a good side and I don't need to watch videos to realise that.
"But we've beaten them before and have to believe we can do it again.
"We've had a good two weeks together and hopefully that will show with a good performance in front of our own fans on Saturday night."

After their last Premier League loss to Manchester City, Manchester United will hope to recover from the disappointment to ensure a win when they face Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on Saturday.
United cannot afford a defeat as any drop in points could see the defending champions trail by eight points behind league leaders Arsenal.
Magpies boss Kevin Keegan is still awaiting his first win since the start of his current reign and would be delighted if it could come against Sir Alex’s side.
However the hosts will have to play without defender Stephen Carr, who is down with a hamstring problem and midfielder Emre who has strained his calf muscle.
Once again Nigerian forward Obafemi Martins is sidelined after suffering an ankle injury, but Charles N'Zogbia is back to the squad from his one-match ban.
Sir Alex Ferguson is boosted with an injury free squad for the match.
Previously, the only worry for the visitors was winger Ryan Giggs, but he too has recovered from the minor knee injury which forced him off the pitch during the second half of the 1-1 draw against Lyon in the Champions League last 16 tie on Wednesday night.
Newcastle (from): Given, Harper, Forster, Beye, N'Zogbia, Enrique, Cacapa, Taylor, Faye, Edgar, Butt, Smith, Milner, Duff, Barton, LuaLua, Owen, Viduka, Ameobi, Carroll.
Man Utd (from): Van der Sar, Brown, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Ronaldo, Anderson, Scholes, Hargreaves, Giggs, Rooney, Tevez, Kuszczak, Saha, Carrick, Nani, O'Shea, Fletcher, Park, Simpson.

Newcastle United’s Kevin Keegan, who is yet to taste a win in his second spell as the manager at St James’ Park, has stressed that he aims to take the club “back where it belongs.”
As of now though, the Toon are in a prolonged slump as they are without a win in the last 10 games, and in the sixth game in charge after being appointed last month, Keegan saw the Tynesiders being hammered 5-1 at home by Manchester United on Saturday.
"I am here for three-and-a-half years. That is what I signed for and that is what I am here for,” said Keegan.
"I have taken a job on. This is a club I love. I have managed here before. I want to take the club back where it belongs.
"My commitment is 100 per cent. You can't give anymore than that.”
The Toon are currently 13th in the Premiership table, and only six points above the relegation zone.
