The World Speed Record for a helicopter is 249.1 mph held by the Westland Lynx - a British machine.
The World Speed Record for a rotor bladed machine was set in 1959 at 191mph & is still held by the Fairy Rotodyne (it could also carry 75 passengers) - another British machine.

That sadly, there really is no end to American arrogance & blind stupidity. Firstly, many of us on here said this could not be won when discussing it, yesterday the main British Commander Brig Mark Carleton-Smith stated that a purely military solution could not be found & that a resolution to the conflict would require negotiations with the Taleban. Then the senior military commander of the rest of the UN forces Brig Richard Blanchette, the spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), said there could be no military solution. Finally, The UN Special Representative in Afghanistan, Kai Eide, made similar comments.
The US Defence Secretary's response? Speaking on board a flight to Budapest to meet Nato defence ministers, Mr Gates rejected the assertion made by Brig Carleton-Smith that a "decisive military victory" should not be expected.
"While we face significant challenges in Afghanistan, there certainly is no reason to be defeatist or to underestimate the opportunities to be successful in the long run," he said.
This is simply staggering blind imbecility flying in the face of the rest of the world's opinion. Even Russia would agree given that in 21 years of fighting they never achieved it.

Even worse than the Yanks can't manage it Stealth as when the Russians were fighting the Mujahideen (sp?) they had American backing. The Yanks are now solely facing the Taliban, no major power backing them (in fact the sceptics are backed themselves by us), so the fact that they still can't defeat the Afghans is very poor.
Just an inability to adapt by the American army - when they aren't blowing the crap out of helpless villagers or poorly equipped armies they are clueless (note 'Nam War) - another sign of arrogance i guess.

Tmesis - To break one word with another. For example: dis-bloomin-graceful, un-flippin-believable.
I use it mainly when talking to British Gas, Southern Electric or my bank.

202,000 = The number of people inducted on to drug treatment programmes last year (costing half a billion pounds).
7,324 = The number of people coming off the programme drug free in the same year i.e 3.6%.
18 out of 500 million spent effectively.

That it took 40 staff 15 hours to carry out the double arm transplant in Germany. So not appearing at an NHS hospital near you any time soon. That Crossness Pumping Station is probably the most beautiful industrial building ever constructed. An absolute cathedral to Engineering excellence

I actually learnt this yesterday, but anyway.....
Isle of Man residents are no longer covered for medical care on any other part of the UK, and residents of anywhere else in the UK are no longer covered for medical care on the IOM.

Each to their own opinion Luke but you'd soon change your mind if you had dysentry or cholera on a regular basis - and you would have done before Crossness was built. You'd have also been living in the "Big Stink" which, regardless of what it's like now, would by all accounts have been a perfumed garden in comparison. Something that was not better in the past see?

You're right of course Stealth, it performs a valuable service and things would be a lot worse without it.
My reaction was mainly shock at calling Crossness beautiful - they should have less colourful, fancy pooe on the inside and sort out the crappy outside. I guess the rank, fetid stench is unavoidable but cycling past it as i did yesterday (on a 35 mile bike ride for the Greenwich and Bexley Cottage Hospice) was no fun...

Padded cycling shorts don't help the crotch area as much as you would think and hope on a long bike ride... My undercarriage is pretty sore today...

In some ways though Luke it's the contrast between engineering that does the filthiest job imaginable & the outstanding beauty of the surrounding metalwork that make it so exceptional. Can you imagine any one creating something that beautiful to house a sewage works today?

That a bacteria has been found deep in a South African goldmine that has the ability to live without an ecosystem, or any known ecosystem.
It has survived without; Oxygen, Carbon, Nitrogen, Sunlight or contact with another organism.
It appears that it's energy is gathered from decomposing radioactive material.
The significance... we now don't have to assume extra-terrestrial life would require the things we expect them to.
There could be life on mars!

Seriously though hundreds of millions of years ago, some of the first bacteria on the planet may have thrived in similar conditions, and that the newly discovered microbes could shed light on research into the origins of life on Earth.
