Hoops bid fond farewell to Parkhead hero Burns
Thousands of Celtic fans will gather at Parkhead today for the funeral of former player, manager and coach Tommy Burns.
Family, friends and former colleagues will remember Burns at a noon service at St Mary's Church in Calton, where he was brought up.
About a mile away, thousands of fans are expected to gather outside Celtic Park where the ceremony will be relaid on giant speakers.
Tributes have poured in since Burns lost his battle against skin cancer early last Thursday morning.
Burns, who was 51, is survived by wife Rosemary, four children and a grandchild.
The lifelong Celtic fan served his club for 25 years as a player, manager and latterly youth development head and first-team coach.
He also had a successful spell as player and manager at Kilmarnock and coached Reading, Newcastle and Scotland, who he played for eight times.
Former Celtic skipper Danny McGrain, who also worked in the youth set-up in recent years, showed the strength of feeling Burns invoked.
'I loved Tommy Burns,' McGrain said. 'You meet some people and you like them, but Tommy was someone that I loved.
'I got to realise that during the early 1980s, although I wouldn't have told him that.
'But he was just one of those people that you just can't help but love. He was a helpful guy and his memory will live on within this club.'
Charlie Nicholas, who played with and under Burns at Parkhead, added: 'He truly was Mr Celtic and he has become such a focal point for what Celtic means to young people now.
'It's absolutely extraordinary and it's something from which Tommy's family and all of Tommy's friends have taken incredible strength.
'I've been at Tommy's house over the past few days and the strength that the family have received from the tributes at the ground, particularly from the Celtic support... it's been an absolutely incredible tribute.'
Close friend and former Partick Thistle manager Gerry Collins said: 'He was never the type who craved a flamboyant lifestyle, out on the town eating in flash restaurants and being noticed.
'Tam would rather be at home with his wife and his family.
'Having said that, he also spent a great deal of time away from home on football business, much more than many other managers.
'He was fortunate to have a wonderful wife in Rosemary, who took care of their home and family.'
The funeral cortege will pass by Celtic Park after the ceremony, on its way to Linn Cemetery.

He kind of seems content just to draw big wages nowadays without putting in much effort. Shame as he was an exciting player at Leeds.

Celtic manager Gordon Strachan has calmed fears over the club's progress in the transfer market by insisting he could make new signings before Sunday's league opener against St Mirren.
The Hoops signed winger Pat McCourt from Derry City in June and clinched a permanent deal for Georgios Samaras following the striker's loan from Manchester City.
But Strachan is determined to bring in more new faces, and there could several players moving in at Parkhead before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.
Strachan said: 'We are trying our best to sign players at the moment. (Chief executive) Peter Lawwell is active at the moment, working very hard.
'From the players' point of view I'm hopeful the squad can be added to before the start of the season. If it doesn't I get on with it.
'It's unfair to talk about targets. Let's just say we are active in quite a few places.'

not impressed ...so far...but hopefully that should chance before the window slams shut I think we will win the league, probably finish 3rd in the CL group depending on who we get and go on a run in the UEFA cup to earn some points for our europe seedings. what about you Nick how do you think Eck will do for you?

Well...this season will be the test as he's got his own team now practically..He's signed alot of Strikers which I'm a tad baffled by..Still..You have to give a new manager at least 2 full seasons before you can judge him and I think he's definitely the right man for the job Good luck for the season Gerry

We should win the league but would be a lot easier if the board freed up say 10-12m to spend on a CB, LB Maloney and perhaps a striker...we can but pray

We should, but its always better to be safe rather than sorry, would hate to let them back into it because the board held money back

I rate him in the Championship yeah, good, solid centre-half, doubt he'll be good enough for a European team though.

Just signed Loovens from Cardiff, any Championship fans know much about him? Great player, but I rate his Cardiff City centre-back partner Roger Johnson far higher. Not sure Loovens would cut it in a European team to be honest.

What's the problem with Balde Gerry? Always thought he was a good solid centre half but he's never in your team now. Did he fall out with Strachan or has he demanded a transfer or what?
