England captain Rio Ferdinand will miss the World Cup after suffering a knee injury in training on Friday morning.
Rio Ferdinand hasn't had a particularly outstanding season for Manchester United while Michael Dawson was voted Tottenham Hotspur's Player of the Year and has been an absolute rock in the heart of the Spurs defence...Stealth?

Not too upset about this, myself. As you said, Rio hasn't been his usual self this season, whereas Dawson has had a great season. Form is what counts in a 7 match competition.
I feel for Rio, mind.

Well I suspect Ledley will be first choice to replace Rio as, injury or not, he's probably the best centre back in the UK. However, his injury will have to be managed as they do at Spurs which will probably mean missing one or two matches and, normally, I would say the man in form should take his place and that is most definitely Dawson. However, he's very like Terry in that he's a do or die defender & not the quickest so, personally, I wouldn't pair him with Terry. The problem is that Upson & Carragher are no better and at least Dawsy is unbeatable in the air and one of the best blockers in the game. I only hope Ledley stays fit though as he's the only central defender with real pace, fantastic vision & the ability to play the ball out of defence without giving it away more often than not - a la Ferdinand. If it comes to it though I'd rather see Dawson in there than either Upson or Carragher as he was in amazing form for us all season.

Not sure why Carragher was taken really.
Its just a shame King has this injury really, as he is class.

Ferdinand has had his best days, probably Terry too.
I'll stick my neck out and say that probably the best combination on form not reputation would be King & Dawson. It won't happen though Terry will play.

I agree with Arover though - both Ferdinand & Terry have become injury prone & Terry is a compete liability in press terms. He totally lost his cool when playing (& being beaten soundly) against us - not the reaction of a "mature" captain.
