If the US gets pulled into a shooting war between North and South Korea again, things could get very ugly. If the US tries to remove Kim Jong Il from power by force, he is just insane enough to go nuclear. One thing to consider is that the war never officially ended, there was an armistice agreement that stopped the shooting. Technically, North and South Korea are still at war. This means that the US, by virtue of it's treaty with the South is still at war with the North as well. Of course, in technical terms, the Chinese, who are allies of the North, are still at war with the South. If this becomes a shooting war again, it could mean a war between the US and China by proxy through the two Koreas, although there is considerable doubt as to whether the Chinese would come to the aid of the North. If this does become a shooting war again, the best move for the US would be to try and immediately overwhelm the North, not play a political game of proportional response. North Korea has the fourth largest standing army in the world, although they are not very well equipped. If the US goes in with the lack of commitment to winning that was exhibited in Vietnam and in Korea previously (as well as several other recent conflicts), it could be a disaster of epic proportions.
