The sacking of Rafa Benitez leaves the club facing a long period of mediocrity, according to former Liverpool defender Alan Hansen.
In the last 20 years, Liverpool have won the league precisely zero times, the FA Cup three times, the League Cup three times, plus one UEFA Cup and one Champions League title. In fact, the last time they won the league (1989-1990) Alan Hansen was still playing for them, so he's actually not predicting anything, just stating the obvious- Liverpool is a mediocre club and have been for a long time, but they have fortunately kept the fans happy with the odd cup win. Because they were by far the best team in England from the late 1970s through the entire 1980s, Liverpool fans have a false sense of entitlement. Sorry folks, but football doesn't work that way- just ask the fans of Nottingham Forrest...

Or Sheffield Wednesday or Leeds! Even ourselves & Man U have suffered the indignity of relegation in recent memory so absolutely no club is immune.

The one side that matches Newcastle United for a misplaced sense of entitlement. In fact, not quite... at least Liverpool actually have been properly successful in the past.

Liverpool are just a badly run club. Gillett and Hicks racking up huge debt, not much in the way of talent coming through the youth team and still can't sort out a new stadium which they desperately need to compete with the big boys such as Man Utd, Barcelona and Real Madrid.
