It is cruel and inhumane to keep animals in cages purely for human entertainment.
We visit the zoo maybe one day in a year for a few hours and we may gain some trivial sense of joy out of it. However, the animals have to stay in that zoo all year round; against their natural instincts to roam free.
They have no reprieve from their environment. Why should humans think that they can keep animals out of their homes and in glass houses just for human entertainment?
It is neither fair nor proportionate.
Humans get food and medical treatment in jails; does that mean that prisoners are happy or that confinement is not punitive? Freedom for all living things.

You base your premise on the unfounded assumption that zoos are 'just for human entertainment'.
Endangered animals are often kept in zoos as part of wider breeding programmes. Some animals in zoos were orphaned, rescued and simply couldn't be returned to the wild because they wouldn't survive. There can be any number of reasons for an animal to be in a zoo other than for human enjoyment. The fact that zoos can charge consumers for admission is an added bonus and allows the animals to be cared for properly. The majority of zoo animals, in this country at least, are very well looked after and live perfectly happy lives.

Would you consider a Lion to be endangered Ben? Or a Wildebeest? There are millions of them...
We would not tolerate this view if it were placed on humans. We would not force a human to be subjected to inhumane treatment and captivity with the reasoning that they would be saving future humans. We have something that is called integrity. Everyone has it and there is no reason why animals should not be given this grace as well. We cannot subject an animal, against it wishes to captivity and rationed foods by citing the future good for all animals. We should respect every animal, even those in zoos and not offer them up as sacrifice.

I would have agreed with Otto when animals in zoos were all kept in tiny cages and were not under threat of extinction. However, many of the areas for the animals nowadays are relatively well designed for the creature they enclose and so many of them are now under threat that future generations would be unlikely to see them at all if not for the work on preservation that zoos carry out.

Do you enjoy eating meat? Because I promise you, if you were not to eat it you would be healthier. Red meat increases the risk of cancer, raises blood pressure etc' when all of the essential amino acids you need from it are available elsewhere.
Now I'm no veggie but the fact is we don't need to eat meat, it is purely for enjoyment.
See what I'm getting at? At least with a zoo there's generally something in it for the animals.
Also, you totally ignored my point about a lot of animals being in captivity because they simply wouldn't survive in the wild.
