Is it really down to more people owning vehicles or Is it down to Beeching "modernising" the railway network and the government not fully extending the motorway network? If it wasn't for Beeching & Marples probably the majority of freight would still be shipped by rail - certainly from overseas. So at the very least we would have far fewer dodgy HGV's from Romania etc. on our roads.
