have a value? www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/newsroom/news_releases/2008/081231_honours.aspxNot sure I have a particularly strong view either way but I am disgusted to see that only 2% were given for services to science & technology. And why does Robert Plant only get a CBE when Mick Jagger & Elton John were knighted? He belonged to one of the greatest rock bands ever & has gone on to even better things in his solo career.

Time to put an end to all this archaic nonsense. Usually the rich and famous are awarded the spoils when they have more than enough already while, the rest make do with differing memberships of the British Empire, a quaint title in the 21st century. The House of Lords is packed with old ex MPs, political donors and anyone else who falls under the Prime Ministers patronage eye. Normal enough in the wheeler dealer world of politics but it has little to do with honour...
Yet again the 'honours' system rewards the rich and famous for pursuing their chosen careers and the less famous for simply doing their jobs. Somewhere in the list there might be a few people who really deserve public recognition. The rich and famous would do better to emulate the late Harry Ferguson, aviation pioneer, inventor, agricultural engineer and industrialist who founded Massey Ferguson tractors. When offered a knighthood he declined saying that his work had brought him fame and fortune which were sufficient reward. If only today's rich and famous had the same integrity!

Very valid points Otto and I think you've convinced me that they have no merit whatsoever.
I was previously on two minds as I believed they could be put to good use when John Major announced that they were to be awards for recognising "extraordinary achievements by ordinary people" but, as you so rightly point out they have since reverted to giving more to those who already have everything.

Having said that mate how could anyone begrudge Patrick Stewart a Knighthood. He has been a great servant to humanity, like that time he went to the past and prevented the Borg from changing history...lol

I had a dream last night that I recieved an MBE for services to the sciences, playing in a Wimbledon final and winning the Guinness Premiership with Leicester.
You'd think I'd have been in for a knighthood after all that...
