2 years?
No he has a lot of work to do and majors to win before he can get No.1 ranking, and the best thing about that is that he knows that and he's prepared to do the work

You're right Gerry but I really think he will make it because, as you say, he has the right attitude & certainly has the talent.

Its by no means certain. Its likely but Nadal is only slightly older than him so will pretty much always be around throughout his career. The there's Djokovic as well...

Was reading something a while back, saying Nadals style and injuries mean he could be 'shot' by the time he's 26!!!

Are tennis rankings done on coefficients, like the football ones? He'll have some way to go yet if they are

I don't know, the guy's in such good condition its difficult to believe that. He punishes his body with his schedule (Nadal this is) and style of play, so he certainly won't have much longevity. He plays a ridiculous amount of tournaments and this will catch up with him sooner rather than later.

I'm not sure if Murray will make number 1, he could but it's not certain there are so many factors involved.
I hope he does because I like the guy, give me him over Tim the toff any day.

I would love him to win Wimbledon and break the curse.

Agree with both the above. Henman didn't have the grit Murray does and that just could enable him to win Wimbledon.

Not to mention how much more athletic - and talented - Murray is.

Have to say Murray has gone up in my estimation even more since agreeing to renegotiate his sponsorship with RBS as it's now public money. On the other hand Jackie Stewart has gone down for refusing to do the same.

No big fans of the toff on here then? He was reasonably talented and archetypally British - we much prefer a plucky loser to a winner anyway. Don't think he deserves all the stick he gets imo as although he choked at Wimbledon it was no mean feat to make #4 in the world or however high he got.

Yup, he reached No4 and as for the players he lost to at Wimbledon.....Sampras twice, Hewitt and Ivanisevic. Sampras and Hewitt were World No1 at the time he played them and went on to win the final. Ivanisevic would be the one that got away, but he also went on to win it as well, so in the end, there's no great shame attached to losing to the eventual winner.

Just three months after starting this thread Murray is already No.3 in the world - and now in the quarters of the French Open.

On the subject of Murray not being particularly liked - I'm sure he'd win a few over if he became World No.1 especially if he won at Wimbledon. I've no idea why he's so disliked anyway to be honest.

He said a few tongue in cheek remarks against the English football team and quite a few people took him at face value and took a disliking to him

I think it was more his winning attitude - that doesn't fit with us always supporting the underdog!

I don't think Murray will win the French this year, in fact i think Gonzalez will beat him tomorrow but his performances on clay are a lot better than they have been in the past, which, to be fair, is thanks in no small part to Alex Corteja, Murray's clay court coach meaning that he should be considered a genuine contender on clay now.
Yes, he's no Nadal but on his day, on clay, i would say he can beat anyone in the world and if he does beat Gonzalez tomorrow (who is in great form but is unpredictable and temperamental) i think he will make the final as i can see him beating Soderling/Davydenko. And once you're in the final anything can happen.
Having said that, this is Federer's best chance to win the French now Nadal is gone but after seeing bits of him vs Haas today i don't think he'll do it. My money is on Del Potro, as the dark horse. Del Potro-Gonzalez final with Del Potro taking it in 4 sets imo.
