Didier Drogba could face a Football Association charge after throwing a coin back at Burnley fans.
The Chelsea striker opened the scoring in Wednesday's Carling Cup clash but was prevented from celebrating when the object was thrown on to the pitch.
Drogba, who also appeared to gesture to the away fans, threw the coin back into the crowd and his actions are now set to be investigated.
The 30-year-old has issued an apology but that may not be enough to save him from a possible misconduct charge.
"This is something I want to make clear. I tried to celebrate the goal and I received some things at me," said Drogba, who was shown a yellow card.
"The big mistake I did was to throw it back so if someone was hurt, I just want to apologise for it.
"This is not something I should show in a football match and I want to apologise.
"It was an incident in the heat of the moment and I regret it. It was just a mistake and nothing more."
Chelsea will now await the referee's report before commenting further but Burnley manager Owen Coyle and Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari both denied seeing the incident.
Scolari said: "I have not spoken with Didier about any problem. The referee gave him a yellow card but I did not see what happened."
Thoughts anyone?

Good! They've charged the moron: news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/c/chelsea/7729437.stmHe could have hit a child & almost definitely would have hit someone completely innocent. He should be charged by the police with assault as any fan would be. Alternatively, if it was a fan they woukd get a life ban from all football grounds so - fair's fair give Drogba one as well!

hopefully the fa will grow a backbone and hand the monkey'sing moron a lengthy ban, but this is the fa we are talking about here so it'll probably be one of these suspended bans where your banned for 10 games but can play after 5 so long as your a good boy.

Personally, I don't think 3 games is enough; if you want to stop it, it should be much more severe and also monetary, with a heavy fine. I admit I don't know the rules regarding game bans - do the players give up salary equal to the number of games banned? If they don't, then they should; if they do, then double it. Someone below pointed out, what if that coin hit a child in the eye? All the money in the world wouldn't bring back lost eyesight. Hit them hard I say and you will definitely stop it and if they are still to hotheaded to stop, then kick them out of the game, we don't need them.

3 games is nowhere near enough. I know I hate Drogba anyway but I'd think the same if it was a Spurs player - it was an extremely stupid & dangerous thing to do and deserves a very strong sanction. As I've said, if a fan did it they'd be pilloried by everybody & rightly so - what makes him any different from any other yob in the crowd?

Ive just written an article on this for FFX/Soccerlens!
Once upon a time, a certain Drogba scored a goal. The Drogba was happy, and celebrated the goal in front of the nearest stand there was. Unfortunatly, that stand was full of Burnley fans. Once particular Burnley fan was a total and complete idiot. This Burnley fan decided to chuck a coin at Drogba. Drogba, reacting as any normal human being would, chucked the coin back.
So who do you think got punished?
The pillock who decided to throw the coin in the first place?
No.
Drogba is going to get punished.
What about the moron who started it, you're asking.
As it stands, absolutely nothing.
This is ridiculous.
British law clearly states that you may defend yourself to the same extent as you were attacked. If having a coin chucked at you isn't attack, nothing is.
OK, Drogba was wrong to chuck it back, but it's natural!
If I punch you in the groin, you return the favour! If I hit you in the temple, you try to do that to me! If I chuck a coin at you, you chuck it back!
This is the vital point!
Human instinct dictates that we do to others what they do to us!
Simple as, case closed.
Meanwhile, the match ended 1-1, with Burnley winning on penalties.
This is a great day for football!
Top 4 dominance is now, arguably, broken, with Liverpool also falling!
Or is it just the wheels coming off at Chelsea?
In roughly 85 home games, Chelsea have lost exactly 2.
Both have come in the space of 3 games...
Make of it what you will!
But whether Chelsea are losing it or not, whether Drogba is an idiot or not, there is never, never an excuse to lob a coin at another human being.
And you never have the right to complain when they do the same back to you.
KtF,
JoeLatics

Didier Drogba has been given a three-match ban by the Football Association after the Chelsea striker admitted a charge of violent conduct following the Carling Cup match against Burnley last week.
The Ivory Coast international threw an object, believed to be a coin, back into the visiting fans after celebrating Chelsea's opener at Stamford Bridge.
It means the striker will miss the forthcoming games against Newcastle United, Arsenal and Bolton though he will be eligible to face Bordeaux in the Champions League on November 26 as the ban only covers domestic football.
Drogba has been given the same treatment as Liverpool defender Jamie Carrager who was handed the mandatory three-game ban for throwing a coin in an FA Cup tie at Arsenal in 2002.
The form of French striker Nicolas Anelka coupled with Drogba's current lack of fitness and form - his only goal this season came in the game against Burnley - means Chelsea are unlikely to be hit hard by the ruling
The 30-year-old admitted the charge earlier this week and apologised to the Burnley fans after the incident.
The Ivory Coast striker could now be fined two weeks' wages by the club, believed to be around £180,000, after Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck confirmed Drogba knew the club were "not happy''.
"Didier did something he should not have done,'' said Buck. "However, you have to look at the fans. I believe the FA will take a look and find the culprits.
"To his credit, Didier apologised publicly almost immediately after the game.''
An FA statement read: "At a regulatory commission today, Chelsea forward Didier Drogba was given a three match suspension.
"Drogba admitted a charge of violent conduct. The charge related to Drogba throwing a missile into the away section of the crowd after scoring during the League Cup match against Burnley at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday 12 November.
"Drogba will serve the suspension with immediate effect.''
Hammersmith and Fulham Police continue to liaise with the FA and Chelsea in a bid to track down the fan who initially threw the coin at the striker.
Police are studying CCTV footage from inside Stamford Bridge as well as reviewing Sky TV's coverage of the game. They are also in contact with Lancashire Police but so far no arrests have been made.
Burnley fans were handed leaflets before Saturday's game at Queens Park Rangers asking for any witnesses to come forward.
