news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/p/portsmouth/7651057.stmThe chant in full... "Sol, Sol, wherever you may be You're on the verge of lunacy And we don't give a f*ck if you're hanging from a tree You Judas c*nt with HIV." Now, although quite OTT can you blame the Spurs fans? I recall Campbell saying he loved Spurs and said he would never leave, before jumping ship to Arsenal. Anyone who moves to someones local rival will always be in for a whirlwind of abuse, but the manner in which he did it only makes things worse really. Not that I'm making an excuse for this behaviour of course as no human being should undergo such abuse.

Bit mean, but they do hate him.

Are you for real Sam? Yes there is hatred between them but if Iwelumo or someone came in for racist abuse along the same background would you just accept that?

I believe at the end of the post I said I wasn't excusing such behaviour as no human being should endure such torrid abuse. However, I was trying to look at both sides by saying that Sol Campbell didn't really help himself by saying he loved Tottenham, would never leave and then joined Arsenal - not that that is an excuse for racism (they could just stick to booing when he gets the ball or something along those lines), I just wanted to look at both sides of the argument is all.
I don't really understand how that chant is racist either unless there were other chants during the game of course.

It happens every time a Spurs player moves across North London. Campbell gave a decade of his best years to Spurs, and decided to move on as Spurs were going nowhere. Yet, all he gets is some pretty offensive abuse...now even at Portsmouth...they never forget!
I will speculate it was a mindless minority though?

I would say it's just the minority Bismarck because every club has its set of idiots obviously.

You must be wearing different glasses from me. And it was not the fact he moved to Arsenal. Pat Jennings did that & still got standing ovations whenever he came back. It was the fact that he had come through the youth system, swore he was Spurs through & through for over a year whilst constantly pretending that of course he was going to sign a new contract and then left on a free just so as he could enhance his own wages because Arsenal hadn't had to pay an estimated transfer fee (at that time) of around £25million. He sold the fans & the club down the river for his thirty pieces of silver and deserves every piece of abuse he gets - provided it isn't racist. THE MAN IS A GREEDY MORON OF THE HIGHEST ORDER & I DON'T CARE WHO THAT UPSETS.

Strong words there my friend....
You must conceed that verbal abuse is on the increase, but until the authorities support the referees and allow them to take appropriate action against anyone abusing officials; then how can you expect fans (who can hear the abuse being thrown about by players), not to hand the same out to players. Perhaps football should take a line from rugby where the referee can penalise any player abusing or even backchatting an official. The odd 10 or 20 yard penalty would soon have managers telling their players to 'keep their gobs shut and get on with the game'. Hopefully in future Sol will do the same...

I apologise for losing it but I break lifetime rules because of that man. I loathe swearing & I totally disagree with the emotion of hate but he manages to inspire both as he not only betrayed the club I love but he did it for the basest of motives (which I also break my non hate rule for) - namely greed.
He is the only person I have booed at a game and, whilst I sympathise with the Spurs fans who do abuse him, I did not because there were kids in the crowd & I do not really condone it for the same reason. Have to say though, that if that was all it was he's wasting his time calling them in. What are they going to charge them with? Blasphemy? Can't use foul & abusive language as half football's income would be sitting inside Wormwood Scrubs next week & it's not even homophobic. In fact, with any luck he'll be charged with unlawfully wasting police time.

Nobody should have to put up with abuse like that, I see Defoe is allegedly getting threatening phone calls from pompey supporters now/.

Never been one for ll the taunting of away fans etc'
Some people do it and its what turned me off football a bit. It just never happens in Rugby where there is possibly more call for all the thuggery of Association Football.

In the lower leagues there is more of it about and you get players widing up the fans too!

Sorry. I've edited my original post because the swearing embarrasses me every time I read it. I don't, and never will, feel less strongly about him but that's no excuse for being foul mouthed.

It's only banter mate it's not as if there's any harm in it and I'm sorry but it's a bit daft if a couple of chants and taunts during a match put you off of football even if it was just a bit. The crowd love it and the players will expect it to happen, especially the away team - as long as the chants aren't racist I don't see the harm myself, it's part and parcel of the beautiful game and makes for an electric atmosphere.

Portsmouth defender Sol Campbell wants football authorities to deduct points from clubs whose fans are responsible for indecent and racist chanting. (Various)
A wimp with no brain - how many clubs would avoid a points deduction for indecent chanting? As for racist chants - thank God they appear to be a thing of the past in the UK.

Got to the point where some people around me were less concerned with supporting Sunderland and more interested in abusing the opposition players and fans. So it wasn't just a couple of chants at all.

I understand football perfectly well, enough to know that its not a war at all. Its a game.
Hooliganism almost always has an effect on innocent people. Even if they aren't hurt, property usually gets damaged.

Why would I go and get involved in a fight for a laugh over a sport?
I've had one sports related fight and that was in a Rugby match, justified by the fact that my mate was getting an absolute pasting.
Any others were purely for self defence.
Fighting for the hell of it? Ridiculous.

Mackem makes a fair point. Take up Boxing Wooler - we need more good young boxers in this country rather than being subjected to poo like Amir Khan by Frank Warren.

My Uncle was a hooligan, he was in it for those exact reasons. He now admits he was an absolute dick back then.
