Which footballers are patron saints? A hell of a lot of gamesmanship and cheating goes on these days. Alan Shearer was no angel, don't forget that. And we know all about Roy Keane. The thing is though, we're not debating what they're like on the pitch. Barton is a malicious thug and that his nothing to do with football. There's a difference between believing someone can calm down on the pitch and trying to hang onto someone who has commited not one but several criminal offences. The two aren't in the same ballpark.

Tottenham assistant manager Gus Poyet is on the brink of becoming Newcastle's new manager after the 40-year-old Uruguayan met club officials in London. (The Sun)
Gianfranco Zola, Didier Deschamps, Roberto Mancini and Slaven Bilic are believed to be the names on Newcastle's managerial shortlist. (The Guardian)
Newcastle fans angry at the way the club is being run want to ban owner Mike Ashley from sitting amongst supporters and from wearing his black and white replica shirt at games. (Various)

How many more clubs are going to become a laughing stock? Last year it was Spurs with their treatment of Jol, this year we've already had Liverpool, Man U, Man City (until bailed out), Newcastle, & West Ham becoming more like soap operas than football clubs. Is there no such thing as dignity left in the mad scramble for power & wealth?

Is there no such thing as dignity left in the mad scramble for power & wealth? I think the answer to that Stealth is no. It's all about money now. No-one cares about the fans anymore and the manager is just a "messenger" to the players. Managers are no longer important at the club, just who owns them.

What is going to change that attitude? Don't any of these foreign owners realise that, without the fan base, the wealth doesn't exist. Do they honestly think that it's Sky & selling corporate boxes that makes the money? Prawn sandwich fans do not buy replica shirts, mouse mats, keyrings & god knows what else and, without selling this merchandise to the REAL fans, no club would make a profit.

I agree but that's not how they see it. They just want to make the club into the best in the world by any means necessary. Also, with all the rich people out there, they don't need the fans money because they are loaded as it is.

You're right of course - Abramovich proves that point beyond doubt & now ADUC or whatever they're called.
IMO though, still can't see how you can be best club in the world with no fans. And you won't stay that way if you end up playing all your matches in an empty ground. We all know how the players love the adulation & wouldn't be motivated without the crowds.

Wigan's own Geordie boss Steve Bruce has been touted as a possible successor to Keegan on his native Tyneside - but Whelan insists he would not be interested.
He said: "One day he will get a big-four job - I realise that, and I think the whole country realises he is one of the best four managers in the world.
He's not one of the best four managers in his own house, let alone the world.

McCarthy has been approached regarding the Newcastle job apparently, hopefully a load of BS but if not then Newcastle can sod off. He wouldn't move to a club in turmoil anyway where they buy players the manager doesn't even ask for, plus we're top of the league at the moment and the Newcastle fans would rather be orgasming over a big name than a lower league player they've never heard of so there's no point him going there as that fickle lot will only accuse him of having a lack of ambition.
Stuart Pearce is another one rumoured to have been approached.
