Started going onto this sort of stuff on the Iraq/Afghan war thread, so I think it deserves a thread of it's own.
So basically your thoughts, your suggestions on how to be more eco-friendly and perhaps renewable sources?

It would take something drastic to stop it...

Yeah, I don't like the look of these hydrogen cars. Not very roomy.

Basically the worlds governments need to have a whip round and buy every home in the world a solar cell powerfull enough for that house. The power gained will be free and clean. The start up costs will be very high but it will be a major benefit in the long run.
The only time this resource will run out is when the Sun burns out but when that happens it will have already engulfed the Earth so it doesn't matter.

Plus that won't be for a few million years yet, as I believe our sun is on its main sequence star stage? I'm not sure.

The Sun is currently a "Dwarf Star" Which means it is considered a normal size in comparison to it's weight, it's got a long way to go yet before it will engulf the Earth.

Well if it was anything else we wouldn't be alive thats for sure. it'd either be too small to support life or too big for us not to be inside it.

The sun is about 5 billion years old, halfway through it's lifetime.Experts say it will engulf the earth in approx 1 billion years during this time Mars will warm up but when the sun goes supernova it will engulf that too....as you say we won't have to worry about it....

I honestly believe that this global warming theory is not true at all. You to eh?And at such a young age.I have read probably too much about it and at this moment believe that we have contributed to the warming of the planet but nowhere near as much as some scientists are making out.

I honestly believe that this global warming theory is not true at all. Why do you think that? What do you base this opinion on considering the majority of the worlds top scientists plus the United Nations science commitee have agreed that humans are to blame and this is a real problem?

Core samples taken from the Greenland Ice Shelf suggest that Global Warming and Cooling has been going on for thousands and thousands of years..we have not been on the planet long enough but I still accept the fact that we are a very destructive species.

I used to think that it was all just part of the normal climatic cycle of the earth but, if that was the case, we'd be entering the next ice age not a warming cycle. Seems to me, from watching a lot of documentaries, that there's plenty to be worried about.

Thats odd because i have heard from somewhere that we are currently leaving an ice age and entering a warming cycle, which is the reason why the earth is warming up

You only have to look at Islands in the middle of the Oceans that are drowning to see that we have a problem. What stage this problem is in i don't know, but we can all be more eco-friendly to help the environment, whatever state it is in.
But all the progress we make will be cancelled out by pollution from China in just 8 years. What we need to do is make Britain a more eco-friendly county first, and then persuade the other countries to do the same. The faster this problem is solved the better.
Else eventually, however many years from now, other people will pay the price for our mistakes.

The problem is there are 6 billion people in the world, how are we meant to make them all eco-friendly?
With the likes of China and USA not doing much at all to cut their carbon emissions, theres not much hope of cutting global warming significantly

Well put Fez.I have 2 bins and a bottle box and I am part of the enviromental team at work etc etc yet the developing industrial nations are a worry. Difficult one this.Who can blame them for wanting a piece of the action, but at what cost? All Britain can do is to be pro-active and look for alternative sources of re-newable energy.

I honestly believe that this global warming theory is not true at all. So the icebergs are acting then? I'm sure there is a small island somewhere near Australia and New Zealand that is already heavily feeling the effects of global warming. You have to admit we've had some scorchers of summers lately, and the very large rainfall this summer was quite bizarre for the time of year.

Although I agree that to do nothing is contributing to the disaster it seems to me that we, Joe Public, are being coerced/forced in to recycling etc & the really big polluters (i.e. Industry) are doing bugger all. We could very easily decrease landfill by reducing the amount of totally useless and, in most cases, totally unbiodegradable packaging that we get around everything nowadays but can you see any government legislating on that? Not now it's businessmen that run countries & not politicians.
We blame China & India for being major polluters but whose are the factories churning out all the CO2 in those countries? American, German, British, Japanese etc.

Food for thought, I don't necessarily believe all these things
1 Global warming is part of the Earths natural cycle (tilt) 2 Global Warming is due to Sun spots 3 "Global Warming" is a way for the west to control the development of third world countries (by stopping the development of power stations etc) 4 Global Warming is a way to increase taxation 5 Global Warming keeps us "in our place" 6 CO2 is such a small proportion of the atmosphere that any rise would make little or no difference.
Yes I do recycle, I drive a green car, I compost waste, I have done everything I can to my house to make it as eco friendly as possible, I intend to get solar panels, I intend to get a windmill etc. etc. etc. BUT!!! Can you believe everything the man tells you?

But my dear Petshrew it's David Attenborough!!!1Arrrgggghhhh! How can we doubt a national institution as "Our David"?
Only joking,it's good for moral.....
Yes I go for No1-Axial Tilt as the main reason.
We have been on this planet as a civilisation for 10,000 years. That is a drop in the ocean.
We do need to look at the bigger picture but the West will not be that worried until the oil starts to run out.Until then it will send out it's scaremongering......

I don't believe it. So mother earth has decided to put its cardigan on because she's feeling a little chilly. Everything evolves or becomes extinct. Look at it from her point of view. These little creatures (us) upsetting her eco balance, so what should she do? yes, get rid of some of us, drought, famine, the odd major catasrophe. Get rid of half the worlds population and the demand for fossil fuels and its products reduces. Hey, raised your blood pressure, had a good laugh, posted for entertainment. I really believe that our contribution to global warming is mimimal.

Right to the people burrying their heads in the sand. You have to agree that the amount of Carbon Dioxide being released into the atmosphere is the work mainly of humans. So how can you then go on to say we are not to blame, CO2 does trap heat which is ultimately warming the planet.
And evn if you do still believe your own theory, do you honestly want take that chance.

The oil running out is the problem, it's already nearly gone unless theres some secret reserves we don't know about. All that Carbon has not been allowed to take it's natural course of slowly decomposing and making it's way into the atmosphere in small quantities that are easily and naturally neutralised thus keeping the Carbon Cycle going. We have interrupted this cycle by burning excessive amounts of fossil fuels.

Yes,you are right. The amount of CO2 being released into the atmostphere by humans has increased considerably in the last 300 years. But,why people like me are cynical is this.Surely there is a way to process hydrogen from seawater to power our cars and aeroplanes?I think there is.I think it has probably been surpressed for years. Why?Because the whole Western economy is based on oil.... I do accept the humans have made a contribution to this warming cycle, but we have just hurried it along, not manufactured it ourselves.... Geologically we are living in an inter-glacial period in the Northern Hemisphere. As Global Warming increases, once again, the glacial ice will melt decrease salinity in the ocean and cut off the gulf stream.Something that has been happening for hundreds of thousands of years.... I am not taking the wee mate,it's what I believe based on the information I have read and, like you, have formulated an opinion I believe in.Not to mention that I still respect yours... Otto.

Yeah i respect your opinion as well. And there we do have Hydrogen powered cars but the technology isn't available yet to make them a viable option for transport certainly not in planes there's barely enough power produced by one to make a car go a decent speed let alone get a plane off the ground then keep it in the air.

Oh I may have mislead you,I am talking about a commercial process to use liquid hydrogen in our cars instead of petrol. The only emissions would be water.
