Congratulations Chelsea fans - regardless of where one stood on Avram Grant’s impact on Chelsea’s performances last season, at least everyone can agree that Scolari has excellent managerial pedigree and will command the respect of the players in the Chelsea dressing room.
Chelsea statement:
“Felipe has great qualities. He is one of the world’s top coaches with a record of success at country and club level. He gets the best out of a talented squad of players and his ambitions and expectations match ours. He was the outstanding choice.
Out of respect for his current role and to ensure minimum disruption to this work there will be no further comment from Chelsea nor from Felipe about his new role until his employment with us commences.”
But all the debate - over his lack of European club-level managerial experience, the language barrier and the instability caused by a change of guard for the second time in less than one year - is secondary to the one question that matters most:
Can Scolari take Chelsea one step further than Grant?
Keep in mind that under Grant, Chelsea went to penalties in the Champions League Final and went to the last day of the season for the league title. Of course you know that. But keep those performances in mind when discussing Scolari’s potential impact?
Can Scolari help Chelsea beat Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool?
How will his managerial style stack up to Rafa, Wenger and Ferguson?
Can Scolari bring Champions League success to Chelsea?
Well.....what do you think?

On first hearing the news I initially thought, good appointment that...But the more I have thought about it, the more doubts I have. This could be another short stay for a Chelsea manager.
First of all he has never managed a European club and he hasn't managed at club level for nearly 10 years.
Scolari is 60 in November, the age Fergie was when he first thought about retirement.
Why get rid of the young special one Mourinho who had the habit of winning trophies only to replace him with a 60 year old man.
Style of play ?
Well one things for sure, Phil Scolari has a reputation back in Brazil as being a man who encouraged his players to go in hard and play brutally. This was certainly the case when he managed Palmeiras. There was outrage when he took over as Brazil manager and he instantly dropped Romario and Brazils free flowing football, in favour of a more robust dour style. Some Brazil fans were still criticising his style of play even after they had won the world cup. So if Kenyon and Abramovich have gone for the samba manager in chase of at last attractive football at the Bridge, then they have got it wrong again.
Scolari is a win at all costs manager. He is his own man and will not be able to handle interference from a certain Mr Abramovich.
As for yet another challenge for Fergie, well he is 1 - 0 up on Scolari. In Tokyo 1999 MAN U beat Scolari's Palmeiras 1-0 thanks to Keano to win the Inter Continental World club Championship.
Scolari has already showed his true colours. Before Euro 2008 even started he urged and advised Ronaldo to join Real Madrid. Well we all know why now. His Chelsea job will be a lot easier if Ronaldo is playing in Spain and not destroying teams at Old Trafford.
32 year old Deco would be a typical Chelsea London lights signing and I predict Big Phil to walk away within 18 months. This will be Fergies last big challenge before he retires and I will back Fergie to come out on top again with or without Ronaldo.

To do better he has to win the Premiership and the Champions League.
Tall order no matter how big the wallet.

In his first season as well or it's a step backwards.
Interesting post that Otto - I always thought of Scolari as a manager of footballing teams but that opened my eyes a bit.

In his first season as well or it's a step backwards. Interesting post that Otto - I always thought of Scolari as a manager of footballing teams but that opened my eyes a bit. There were elements in Brazil who were up in arms when he was appointed because of his reputation for the pragmatic approach. It's a necessary element though these days nobody wins anything any more by throwing caution to the wind.

i think Grant has set the standards too high and only one manager will be able to do better, and that will be when Chelsea find "that one", like Man Utd have in Fergie. I personnally don't think Scolari is that man, theres no doubting that he will win something at Chelsea but i think, like Jose, it won't be enough to please the Chelsea board.

Give him a few months and he will be fine. He will be fine because he'll be out of the job by then and free of the stress!

The only reason Scolari is there is because of the money he is being paid. It really comes to something when one man can outbid an entire country.

He is an excellent manager though, just lacks the appropriate experience.

to do better than avram grant scolari just needs to win something, as far as i'm concerned it's irrelevent that grant got chelsea to the league cup and champions league final and finished 2nd in the league cos he still won monkey's all, in my honest opinion i think it was jose mourinho's chelsea that got to those finals and 2nd in the league and i know thats harsh on grant but thats how i see it. am not sure how well scolari will do and only time will tell but to say that to do better than grant he has to win the prem and champions league is quite frankly absolutely rediculous as avram won nowt himself.
