news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/g/gretna/7433470.stmThis was a bit of a shock! Not that Gretna have gone - that was a foregone conclusion with these ridiculous points penalties just making things worse for clubs in trouble - but, many years ago when I had a small courier company we sponsored the 4th club on the list to take their place - Cove Rangers. In fact, due to them I always say I have the most expensive tie in history. They had promised that at the match where we became sponsors there would be all sorts of local press attending but, come the day, I gave them a cheque for a £1,000 & they presented me with a club tie - without a single newspaperman in attendance! So instead of publicity all I got for my £1.000 was a tie Turned out to be an interesting experience though. I won't go in to all details as it's a long story but I was involved in this through meeting Dennis Nielsens last victim (who escaped & shopped him) and had since earned a living as a professional conman!

It is a shame that they are no more. To be honest, I think that they rose through the divisions far too quickly to cope with.

I agree Pij - non league 2002, premier 2007. I'm sorry they've gone because Gretna has a lot of romance attached to it what with eloping to get married over the blacksmith's anvil etc.

I'm going off on a slight tangent here, but why is there no relegation from Division 3 to the Highland League (or whatever the next league down is)? There are lower teams operating that are in the Scottish Cup each year, so I'm guessing there are lower rungs below Division 3.

Yes there is. I can't think of any of the top of my head though.

Just due to the fact there are so many alternative leagues in operation, Highland League, South of Scotland, Juniors etc etc

But they're back albeit on a smaller scale:
Gretna starts again from scratch Gretna will play in the East of Scotland league this season asa bid by supporters to try to retain a football team in Gretna has been successful.
Concerned fans formed an action group after their club went into administration and dropped out of the Scottish Football League.
It was feared it could be the end of football in the town, but Gretna FC have now been admitted to the East of Scotland League.
The newly-formed club will start its campaign on 9 August.
A series of meetings have been held in the town since the team hit financial troubles and fell out of the SFL.
They culminated in the successful bid for East of Scotland status.
However, the new team will not be able to play its games at Raydale Park, the traditional home of the club.
It will play its home matches at the Everholm, in nearby Annan, after negotiating a deal with Annandale and Eskdale Sports Trust.
