Who in the current England set up could truly be described as world class?
To my mind only Gerrard truly fits here with the possibility of Rooney becoming so.

Owen is definitely as well IMO. Possibly when in his early 20s with the confidence he had and the pace to burn but no so sure he'll ever hit those heights again.

Gerrard, Rooney, Lampard, Hargreaves, Terry, Ferdinand, Neville, Richards.
I can't believe you forgot that the captain is the best center half in the world.

The right sided gawp brother a world class player? Richards will have to put in a few years of top drawer performances before he can be mentioned, he certainly didn't look like one on Sunday. Lampard never. Hargreaves good but not that good. Ferdinand should be better than he is, doesn't take the responsibility he should now as a senior pro. Terry, I'm listening.

Lampard is world class, he consitently puts in great performances for Chelsea ( england is debatable ) and scores hatful of goals, and all the big clubs are always on the look out for him.

I agree he's tasty for Chelsea, but to be defined as world class he has to perform consistently on the International stage and he just doesn't do that.

Of course Gary Neville is a world class player. He's been a mainstay of one of the worlds top clubs for most of his career and is always consistent for England.

I think world class is used far to often to describe players these days,it seems like if a player is good & gets in the papers alot being praised then everybody starts to call them world class.Of course everybody has there own ideas of what world class is,but there is no way i would call Ferdinand,Neville,Hargreaves or Richards world class.Terry is a fantastic Defender & yes i may put him in that Category,Lampard fantastic at club level but has yet to prove it on the world stage for me.And as for Gerrard he is a Unbelievable player and i would call him world class. As for Rooney he is brilliant but i wouldn't call him world class yet maybe one day he will be in that category . When you read out the names of world class players such as Pele,Van Basten, Zidane etc etc some of the forenamed players surley cant be on it....

not a single player in the England team is world class, hence us struggling to beat the likes of Andorra, Isreal and Macedonia!!

Richards will be very good when he's older.
I'd say Gerrard is our highest ranked world class player and definitely our best, Rooney will be in years to come.
No arguments, Terry is world class.

How can you say Gerrard is not world class ? he is outstanding and he can regularly win a game almost single handed. He picks the whole team up when things are not going there way,he attacks he defends he does just about everything. The fact that England don't play very good football doesn't mean he isn't world class,i would say that is more down to the management & or lack of it.If anyone is its him

If I was appointed England manager I would have made him captain straight away, I think he's a very influential player.

Your having a laugh, calling Gary Neville a "world class" player ! Yes he's been one of the mainstay in the England team, but as for one of world top clubs (Man.U) don't think so ! ! How time have they won the Champoins league (once) Seem to remember Shaun Goater making him look a mug a few years ago in the Manchester Derby ! Anyway, he'll never play for England again, now that Micah Richards has taken his place !

Richards will be up there soon, he has enormous potential. Of the current crop i would say:
Gerrard, Terry and Owen are world class.
i think Owen is world class because of one simple reason: He scores goals whatever team he plays for. He has scored consistently for: Liverpool, Real Madrid, England, and now Newcastle.
His overall play isn't fantastic, but i believe as a master in the art of goal-scoring, he deserves to be tagged as a world class player. They're a rare breed you know.

Gerrard, Owen - no argument, Richards almost certainly will be. Would have put Terry there last year but he's turned in to a monumental whinger - what price him joining Arsenal soon?
And how did Henry get so high up the stats? Like Lampard & Figo, he never performs at the highest level despite being great in the league.

Wow! We'll have to add Gareth Barry to the list after Israel & Russia. Hopefully that'll be the end of trying to play Lampard & Gerrard together which just doesn't work.

Got to agree with CityLee and Nick, Richards is brilliant even at 19. Gary Neville won't be getting a toe in the England team if he carries on like this.

Just Rooney and Gerrard I'm afraid, certainly at international level Terry and Lampard's club form outshines their international ones. Hargreaves isn't quite there yet, Richards no doubt one day will be a world class defender, Owen was and needs his fitness back before such a claim can be made, Beckham probably was and still has a lot to offer but not world class anymore for me.
