The Kids Are Alright 2010
Good stuff this. Annette Bening in a gentle comedy about lesbian mothers with 2 children who become curious about theirn donor (dude) father. Thoughtful, funny and well acted. Certainly worth a look.

Alice In Wonderland 2010
Good stab at it. Technology helps and Johnny Depp swaggers, I have to admit there were parts that I lapped up mostly the ones with Depp in them. Helen Bonham Carter pulled her tripe out too. Mrs Rover snoozed whilst I absorbed.

Centurion 2010
Set in the land of the Sweaty this one has Dominic West out of the Wire in it. Those Picts were clearly a tough nut to crack hence Hadrian's wall. It's an unlikely tale of heroism in the name of the empire against formidable female opposition.
Half reasonable.

Rabbit Hole 2010
Here's Nicole Kidman and her husband, they've lost a 4 year old in a road traffic accident and the film deals with their attempts to come to terms with this in their own ways and the resulting strains upon their marriage and family dynamics.

The Men Who Stare At Goats 2010
Great cast including Clooney, Spacey, Bridges and McGregor pretty much let down by the quality of the script. This could've been an ace film but every time it threatened to be so it let itself down and lost its way. Shame, I was rooting for it but it was never going to hoist itself up there.

Cracks 2009
Good enough this set in the 1930s in an English girl's boarding school. The dynamic of the class group is suddenly dramatically altered by the arrival of a new boarder from Spain. A girl of mystery and aristocatic background arrives and prompts different reactions from both pupils and teacher alike. Thoughtful and well shot this is a decent effort.

The King's Speech 2010
Eagerly anticipated, tipped for honours at this years Oscars I was really looking forward to this one. It did not disappoint, all the central performances are more than strong, Colin Firth is excellent as are Geoffrey Rush, Helen Bonham Carter and check Timothy Spall out as Winston Churchill. Also it informed me on stuff I wasn't aware of at all and as a contemporary historian in another life I'm not too proud of that.
Ace film.

127 Hours 2010
Heart rending story of lad in the Colorado wilderness and the accident he has that leaves him in a ravine with his arm trapped by a boulder. Guess what he has to do to free himself. True story, Oscar nominated, extremely watchable,

True Grit 2010
Remake of the old John Wayne classic by the Coen brothers. Again Oscar nominated for best picture this has Jeff Bridges in the Rooster Cogburn role and works really well. I'm a big fan of Bridges and thought he thoroughly deserved his award for best actor last year in Crazy Heart. He'll be up there again for this but I suspect Colin Firth will probably trot off with it this time round. Good stuff.

Greenberg 2010
Interesting one this, Ben Stiller in a staright role playing a forty something with a background in music fresh out of a mental health establsihment. It's certainly not like anything I've seen Stiller in before and I reckon he carries the film well. Quite a lot of gentle probing around his situation results in us seeing him as a self obsessed individual more than capable of hurting others. He's ably supported by Rhys Ifans and Greta Gerwig. I enjoyed it.
