(I don't really want rid of anyone, just an attention grabber for the title)
As most of you will know, I'm normally one to stick up for the rights of other cultures. Specifically in the face of white and Christian supremacists spouting the usual "This is a white/Christian nation and they'll bloody well abide by our rules". Now it's different. Now I've heard that the biggest threat to the teaching of evolutionary theory in our classrooms is Islam. Now I don't mind when it is a nativity play cancelled or a carol service called off, quite frankly it just portrays the religious and their sympathisers as petty when the poo hits the fan in right wing newspapers. When they start making attempts to skew things like this and have teachers teach an utter myth though... well it makes my blood boil.

I'm afraid I can't have too much sympathy here Ben. It was alright when they were attacking Christianity which, for the majority of UK people, is the main religion or changing the landscape from a western one to a middle eastern one but when it comes to something you hold dear to your heart they're suddenly not so welcome?
I'm not accusing you of anything or trying to start a fight but it is this attitude that allows fascists, dictators and capitalists to get away with murder.

I was joking about them not being welcome, I made that clear in the bracketed header. And yes, I'm ok with any religion attacking any other religion. When it comes to things like this, I'm not ok with it. It's not just evolution. For example, a good deal of Muslims are Holocaust deniers and make attempts to have the Holocaust removed from the curriculum, I'm angry about that as well. It's hardly a subject close to my heart.

Sorry Ben - I thought you probably were joking but my reply IS regarding something close to my heart. Too many people ignore iniquities until they affect them by which time it's generally too late to do anything about it. Allowing Muslims to have so much say in the running of this country is beginning to head in that direction.

I'm just curious as to what the problem is. Say a Mosque gets put up near your house... so what? Is that worse than some of the grotty pre-fab Churches that spring up around the country? A nativity play gets cancelled at the local state primary? Excellent! Religion shouldn't play a part in state-funded schools anyway, except in the religious education class.
When they get their hands on the curriculum though (this goes for Muslims, Christians, Jews, Hindus or whoever), when they start wanting to tell kids that evolution is a hoax and the holocaust never happened... then we have a problem.

I don't want any religious beliefs influencing my life in any way whatsoever. Unfortunately that's not possible as I currently live in a country where the population is 99% muslim, fortunately there is a secular state.
The evolution thing is a difficult one, although I'm pretty much convinced that the THEORY of evolution is pretty much accurate I can't prove that and as far as I'm aware neither can anyone else. What I do know though is that of all the religions I'm aware of Islam is the most ridiculous (closely followed by Catholicism).
Why are people so stupid?

If it hadn't been 'proved' then it would still be the evolutionary hypothesis.

Mmmm...Regarding the Nativity Plays.Surely we accept that this country has a State religion and part of that religion is the birth of Jesus. We are taught that from the age of 3...is that wrong?

Cancelling nativity plays/carols/not putting up decorations incase of offending other religions is so wrong. It's playing into the hands of the extremists. Nativity plays, carols and putting up christmas decorations has been happening in this country way before immigration began. Besides, other religions participate in christmas to a certain extent.

Oh I agree Henry...I have to say though that I totally accept Ben,Arover and Olly's right to be athiests as they do my right to believe in God.

If it hadn't been 'proved' then it would still be the evolutionary hypothesis. As far as I can see it still is a hypothesis.
