Werder Bremen thumped Bayer Leverkusen 5-2 on Saturday to move level on points with tiring leaders Bayern Munich at the halfway stage of the season.
Bayern did just enough to hold on to top spot, and claim the honorary title of 'winter champions', with a goalless draw away to Hertha Berlin.
They now lead Werder only by goal difference, though, after Thomas Schaaf's side recovered from their Champions League exit in midweek by clinching a great comeback win.
The highlights for the crowd were two goals from Ivan Klasnic, the Croatian striker who recently returned after two kidney transplant operations this year.
The results put both Bayern and Werder on 36 points from 17 matches, four ahead of third-placed Hamburg SV, after they needed a last-gasp equaliser from Ivica Olic to grab a 1-1 draw away to Karlsruhe.
Leverkusen stay fourth on 30 points, with Schalke 04 up to fifth a point further back after they won 2-1 at home to Nuremberg.
After Sunday's remaining two matches, the Bundesliga takes a break until Feb. 1, by which time Bayern will hope to have recovered their sharpness.

Hansa Rostock climbed out of the bottom three in the Bundesliga with a 2-0 win at home to fellow strugglers VfL Bochum on Sunday.
First-half headers from Kai Buelow and Sebastian Haehnge put Rostock clear and they had few problems holding on against a Bochum side with few ideas in attack.
Duisburg were left in bottom place when they were beaten 1-0 at home by Eintracht Frankfurt in the day's other match.
At the halfway stage of the season, Duisburg are in 18th with 13 points from 17 matches.
Energie Cottbus and Nuremberg occupy the other two relegation places with 15 points apiece.
Rostock move up to 15th with 17 points, with Bochum now just two points better off in 13th place.
Bayern Munich did just enough to hold on to top spot when they drew 0-0 at Hertha Berlin on Saturday.
Bayern, the 'winter champions', have 36 points and lead Werder Bremen on goal difference after Thomas Schaaf's side won 5-2 at home to Bayer Leverkusen.
The Bundesliga resumes after the mid-season break on Feb. 1.

Schlaudraff happy at Bayern Friday Dec 28 2007 11:05 Bayern Munich striker Jan Schlaudraff is happy to stay at the Allianz Arena despite a lack of first-team opportunities.
The 24-year-old frontman has found himself behind prolific strike pair Miroslav Klose and Luca Toni, plus Germany international Lukas Podolski, in the pecking order since his arrival from Alemannia Aachen in the summer.
But Schlaudraff has cooled rumours of a January departure after claiming he wants to extend his contract with the club.
"I hope to stay even longer," he told Kicker.
Speaking earlier in the month, Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge also insisted the club had no plans to offload Schlaudraff.
"They can save themselves the phone call," he said referring to reported interest. "We are not in any way prepared to discuss Jan Schlaudraff."

Bochum have landed attacking midfielder Mimoun Azaouagh on loan from Schalke.
The former Germany Under-21 international has struggled to break into the first team at Schalke following his move from Mainz 18 months ago.
Azaouagh, who has made only five substitute appearances this season, will remain with Bochum until the end of the season.
"Mimoun Azaouagh is a versatile, technically gifted player who will enhance the quality of our attack," said Bochum spokesman Stefan Kuntz.

Frankfurt to net Fenin Thursday Dec 27 2007 14:31 Promising Czech Republic international striker Martin Fenin has opted to join Eintracht Frankfurt rather than Juventus in the January transfer window.
The 20-year-old will leave FK Teplice to head to Germany, and believes that his career will develop faster with the Bundesliga outfit.
Fenin told Sports: "Juventus would also have been great, but I knew right from the start that they would send me on loan to Udinese or Genoa and that would not have been good.
"I have always dreamed of playing in front of full stadiums. It's been my dream, that's why you play football. The main reason was Frankfurt were really keen on me."
Fenin is expected to sign a five-year contract with Frankfurt, with the deal worth just over £4million.

Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has confirmed that he will leave the club at the end of the current campaign and he is expected to become the next manager of the Swiss national team.
Hitzfeld took charge at Bayern for the second time in his career last February, having previously guided the Bavarian giants to four Bundesliga titles and Champions League glory in 2001.
"I made my decision known to the club's officials three weeks ago. I want to leave the job at the end of the season," Hitzfeld confirmed.
"I will now do all I can to win trophies for Bayern in the time left to me."
He had previously been linked with the Switzerland job after meeting Swiss national team delegate Ernst Lammli for preliminary talks.
"It's true that we have met," Lammli admitted. "It was just an informal chat between old friends.
"We have known each other for 25 years now and that is something different to meeting a stranger."

Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer would welcome Jose Mourinho as the next coach of his club when Ottmar Hitzfeld leaves in the summer. The former Chelsea and Porto boss is one of the leading candidates to assume control of the Bavarians, although the fact he does not speak German could rule him out of the running. However, Beckenbauer feels there is enough time for Mourinho to learn the language and be ready to take the reins in six months time. 'Mourinho? Why not? He would have until the summer to undergo a language course.' Beckenbauer wrote in his column in Germany's Bild newspaper. 'Our club needs a big name. He has got to be a great tactician, have already accumulated experience and have command of the German language.' One man who does have such a CV is Beckenbauer himself, who has already led Bayern and Germany to glory in the 1990s. However, the 62-year-old will not be putting forward his own candidacy this time. 'The only person I can really rule out of the running is myself,' he added. 'The initial short-list will be drawn up by Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Uli Hoeness, then the board will take a vote.'

Jurgen Klinsmann will take over as coach of Bayern Munich from next season.
The former Germany boss will take over from Ottmar Hitzfeld, who is set to step down from the post at the end of the current campaign.
A statement on Bayern's official website:, read: 'Former Germany boss Jurgen Klinsmann will succeed Ottmar Hitzfeld as Bayern head coach on July 1, 2008.'
The appointment marks Klinsmann's first foray into club coaching after he guided host nation Germany to third place in the 2006 World Cup.
The 43-year-old won 108 caps for his country and was captain for the successful Euro 96 campaign.
Klinsmann enjoyed a successful stint with Bayern between 1995 and 1997, winning UEFA Cup and Bundesliga honours.
The club have announced a press conference for 4pm local time on Friday.

Bayern Munich have ruled out a summer move for Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann.
The veteran German has lost his place as number one at Emirates Stadium to Manuel Almunia, but turned down a loan move to former club Borussia Dortmund this month.
Lehmann, 38, will be a free agent at the end of the season when his current contract expires, and has indicated he could contemplate retirement after Euro 2008.
But with Oliver Kahn set to hang up his gloves in the summer, reports in Germany suggested Bayern would move for Lehmann.
However, general manager Uli Hoeness maintains Michael Rensing will be given his chance.
'We have promised Michael over and over again that he would be our first choice when Oliver Kahn retires,' Hoeness told German television channel DSF.
'It would be relatively senseless to replace one 38-year-old with another - besides Lehmann is not the sort of player to sit on the bench waiting for Michael to get ill or injured.'

Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer has expressed doubt over whether former Liverpool managerial target Jurgen Klinsmann can cut it as a club boss.
The former Tottenham striker is due to take the helm at Bayern this summer, having met with Liverpool co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett last year to discuss the possibility of replacing Rafael Benitez at Anfield.
Klinsmann's only managerial experience so far is with Germany, who he led to the semi-finals of the 2006 World Cup on home turf.
And Beckenbauer, himself a former national team boss, still needs convincing that Bayern's manager-elect has what it takes to succeed at club level.
'I can only hope he can last out for the full two years,' said Beckenbauer.
'He has not tried this yet. He has got to know that coaching a club is different to coaching the national team.'

Bundesliga: Werder Bremen slip up at home
BERLIN, Feb 3 (Reuters) - Werder Bremen slipped three points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich when they capped a bad week with a 2-1 defeat at home to Bochum on Sunday.
Daniel Jensen gave Werder the lead just before halftime and the home side were in control until Benjamin Auer nipped in for an equaliser in the 68th minute.
Werder hopes were hit by a red card for centre-back Naldo two minutes later and Anthar Yahia made them pay when he grabbed a late winner.
Sunday's defeat was a third disappointment for the club in six days, after the first and second teams were knocked out of the German Cup on consecutive nights this week.
It gave Bayern breathing space at the top with 39 points from 18 games following a 2-1 win over Hansa Rostock on Friday.
Werder, who stay second on 36, must travel to face Bayern in the Bundesliga match next Sunday, knowing defeat would leave them six points adrift.
Schalke 04 made a great start to the second half of the season with a 4-1 home win over champions VfB Stuttgart.
Kevin Kuranyi got two of the goals against his former club and there was more to celebrate when Ze Roberto -a new signing not to be confused with the Bayern player of the same name - scored just two minutes into his debut after coming on as a sub.
Victory took Schalke back up to fifth with 32 points, one behind Bayer Leverkusen and Hamburg SV in third and fourth respectively.
Werder only had themselves to blame for losing against Bochum. They missed a stack of chances in the opening hour and were punished for collective errors in defence on the two goals and the sending-off of Naldo.
'It was just like in the Cup defeat in Dortmund,' coach Thomas Schaaf told reporters. 'We can't afford to let this happen again. We had enough chances to win this.'

BERLIN, Feb 7 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich will have to make do without Franck Ribery when they bid to move six points clear in the Bundesliga by winning at home to Werder Bremen in their 'summit meeting' on Sunday (1600 GMT).
French midfielder Ribery, who signed from Olympique Marseille for 25 million euros ($36.62 million) last year, was Bayern's best player in the first half of the season and scored the opening goal in last weekend's 2-1 win over Hansa Rostock.
Unfortunately for the Bavarians, he went off at halftime with a hamstring injury and will be out for about three weeks.
The good news for coach Ottmar Hitzfeld is that striker Miroslav Klose is in great form, scoring his 37th international goal in Germany's 3-0 win over Austria on Wednesday.
Bayern will expect a furious challenge from Werder, who were stung by a 2-1 defeat at home to Bochum in their first league match back after the long mid-season break.
That result gave Bayern a three-point cushion at the top and, after Hamburg SV also dropped points, Hitzfeld's team suddenly have a chance to build a substantial lead.
'It would be a small milestone on the way to the title,' Hitzfeld told reporters with an eye on a win against Werder.
He also hopes to have Brazilian centre-back Lucio fit again after an Achilles problem.
That is important because the Bayern defence will have to be at their best to see off a Werder side who are by far the highest scorers in the Bundesliga with 43 goals.
Finland's Petri Pasanen could return for them at the Allianz Arena but influential midfielder Torsten Frings remains on the injured list.
There is another clash between two title candidates on Saturday, when Bayer Leverkusen host Hamburg SV in a battle between third and fourth. Both sides have 33 points, six behind Bayern.
Hamburg played poorly on their return to action last weekend, managing only a 1-1 draw at home to Hanover 96.
They had 10 players on international duty this week, leaving coach Huub Stevens frustrated as he looked ahead to the trip to Leverkusen.
'It's far from ideal preparation,' Stevens told the club's website.
Leverkusen won a breathless match at Energie Cottbus 3-2 last time out to leapfrog Hamburg into third place.
The 19th round of matches begins with a clash between Eintracht Frankfurt and Arminia Bielefeld on Friday.
Frankfurt fans will be eager to see Martin Fenin make his first home appearance after the Czech striker scored a hat-trick on his debut in last weekend's 3-0 win at Hertha Berlin.

I'm fully aware the next sentence is going to sound awfully coquettish, but we journalists are so committed to the naked truth that there's nothing I can do about it. There might have been a snowman at the Nuremberg game, but despite the snow there was a game. The other day I met a terribly famous footballer who happens to be from Germany in a hotel in South London. Seeing that he was carrying a copy not of, say, 'The Financial Times' or 'Forbes' but the Thursday edition our own veritable football-in-print institution, 'kicker' magazine, I struck up a conversation about a think-piece penned by Hans Meyer. In said issue of 'kicker', Meyer, the iconic Nuremberg coach, calls for an abolition of the Bundesliga's traditional winter break. Obviously, he doesn't think that those five to six weeks of rest in December and January give you time to prepare for the second half of the season: 'Like any fan, like any player I long for the end of the winter preparation. A preparation that has proven how superfluous it is.' Meyer says the winter break is too short to be really useful in terms of regeneration or building up what we call the 'basics' for the season (meaning both a certain level of fitness to carry you through gruelling weeks plus a tactical understanding of what the team should be doing). It would make a lot more sense, according to Meyer, to gain a few weeks during the winter and add them to the pre-season preparations in the summer. This is, by and large, also what I happen to think. We've had that long winter break for as long as I can remember, and I guess that's precisely one of the reasons it's still there: tradition. Then again, it's not as much of a tradition as most people think. For instance, when you ask people why we don't play football in late December and January, they usually say it's because of the weather. And when you then point out that the weather is perfectly okay during those months, they will argue that it used be different. Back in the 60s or 50s. Back before global warming. Well, that's strange. Because until the advent of the Bundesliga in 1963 there really wasn't anything you could call a winter break. Under the old system of the regional 'Oberligen', teams played week in, week out even during those supposedly nasty months. This piece of information usually stuns Germans who aren't old enough to remember the days of the Oberligen, the more so since the players back then were semi-pros at best. But it's true. You can look it up. Here are a few random picks from my stats books: In the 1953-54 season, the Oberliga West had complete matchdays on December 20, December 27, January 3 and January 10. In the 1957-58 season, the Oberliga Berlin offered one game on December 22, five games on December 29 and a complete matchday on January 5. In the 1960-61 season, the Oberliga North had games scheduled for December 18, December 26, January 2 and a complete matchday on January 9. Of course there was a reason. Back in those days, before a nationwide league was introduced, the Oberliga seasons were comparable to very long qualification rounds, as the standings would determine who would make it to the latter stages of the national championships, contested in a few group games and then knock-out matches. And so the Oberligen had to have a very tight schedule and be decided early in the year in order to allow the top teams to move on to the next stage. But whatever the reason for playing through the winter, the point is that it obviously can be done, and used to be done, even in Germany. Back to the famous footballer. He's played in both Germany and England, so I asked him about his opinion on the subject. Predictably (because every player prefers playing to training) he said he doesn't mind not having a winter break. He added, though, that the ideal solution would be to follow the Spanish model and get ten days or two weeks off for the festive season and New Year's Eve. Ah, well. They have families too, I reckon. But anyway, the long and the short of it is that the winter break is an anachronism. And if Al Gore is right it will become even more superfluous in the future. So let's kick this habit. Wrap up warm: A Bundelsiga cameraman braves the blizzard to keep the German public entertained. Another rule discussion that made the pages of 'kicker' concerns the draw for the German FA Cup. In the next round, Jena will play away at Stuttgart and Hoffenheim will travel to Dortmund. On Monday, a 'kicker' editor argued that 'those ties would be much more enticing if the lower-division teams would enjoy the home-field advantage'. He says: 'One could argue that the Bundesliga would have to prefer a top team as Cup winner and thus starter in the Uefa Cup, because of Uefa's 5-year rankings. On the other hand, shouldn't a top-flight team always be able to hold their own away from home against a side from a lower division?' Wise words, still I'm not entirely convinced. What if a club like Hansa Rostock, which needs every penny it can find, gets drawn against a wealthy club that happens to be playing in the second division, like Cologne? If I were a Hansa fan I'd consider it grossly unfair to be robbed of a home game and a good chance at earning money in the Cup, not to mention making the next round, only because my opponent has had the misfortune of getting relegated. But I guess we can discuss that at length roughly a year from now. During the long, long winter break.

The big game at the top of the Bundesliga ended all square as Bayern Munich came from behind at The Allianz Arena.
Second placed Werder remain three points adrift of Bayern after they were pegged back.
Diego had given Werder the lead after just six minutes, but Bayern's veteran Brazilian Ze Roberto levelled matters on 32 minutes.
Ze Roberto's strike spared the blushes of Italian Luca Toni who missed a spot-kick before Bayern equalised.
The Revier Derby at the Signal Iduna Park went the way of the visitors as Schalke claimed a 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund.
A Gerald Asamoah (19) strike and an own goal from Martin Amedick (31), twice gave Schalke the lead but each time Borussia pegged them back - firstly though Giovanni Federico (21) and then Mlande Petric (50).
Dortmund's hopes of taking something from the game were hampered by Dede's sending off on 76 minutes and indeed Werder took advantage of the extra man as Fabian Ernst grabbed the winner just eight minutes from time.
The win takes Schalke into third place, while Dortmund remain in 13th.

BERLIN, Feb 10 (Reuters) - Werder Bremen held Bayern Munich to a 1-1 draw in a breathless match at the Allianz Arena on Sunday to stay within striking distance of the Bundesliga leaders.
Bayern had the chance to go six points clear by winning the battle of the top two but they had still not settled when Diego put Werder ahead in the sixth minute.
Luca Toni had a penalty saved as Bayern responded and the home side grabbed a deserved equaliser through Ze Roberto in the 32nd minute.
That left Bayern top with 40 points from 19 games, followed by Werder on 37.
Schalke 04 climbed up to third on 35 points thanks to a 3-2 win away to Borussia Dortmund in the big Ruhr derby, with Fabian Ernst getting the winner eight minutes from time.
Bayer Leverkusen are fourth on 34 points, ahead of Hamburg SV on goal difference. The two sides shared a 1-1 draw on Saturday.
Werder had gone out of the Cup and lost at home to Bochum in the league in their first two matches in 2008 and they seemed determined to atone for those twin defeats as they attacked Bayern from the start on Sunday.
They went ahead when Markus Rosenberg cut out Lucio with a neat pass that set up Diego to beat Oliver Kahn from five metres.
That set the tone for a frantic first half, with Bayern throwing everything forward and Werder regularly looking dangerous on the break.
Toni won a penalty when he went down under the challenge of goalkeeper Tim Wiese in the 29th minute but the Italian striker then saw his weak effort saved.
Wiese could do nothing three minutes later when Ze Roberto exchanged passes with Hamit Altintop and shot from eight metres out.
"It was an aggressive match and neither side gave anything away," Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld told reporters.
"They were very sharp early on and it cost us a lot to get the goal back. I just can't be happy because we didn't get that six-point cushion."
Schalke were the weekend's big winners, after they took advantage of the sending-off of Dede in the 76th minute to sneak a satisfying late winner in Dortmund, where a defeat in the penultimate game of last season effectively cost them the title.

Nuremberg appoint Von Heesen as new coach
BERLIN, Feb 12 (Reuters) - Bundesliga strugglers Nuremberg appointed Thomas von Heesen as their coach on Tuesday, on a contract running until 2009.
Nuremberg, German Cup winners last season, fired Hans Meyer on Monday after the club slipped to third from bottom in the Bundesliga table.
'I'm going to give everything I've got from the first moment,' Von Heesen said at a news conference after his appointment was made official. 'It's a big challenge but I'm taking it on with relish.'
Von Heesen quit as coach of Arminia Bielefeld this time last year. His first game in charge of Nuremberg will be against Benfica in the UEFA Cup on Thursday.

BERLIN, Feb 16 (Reuters) - Werder Bremen ground out a 2-0 win at home to 10-man Nuremberg on Saturday to move level on points with Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich, at least for a night.
Nuremberg, playing their first league game under new coach Thomas von Heesen, made life awkward for the title challengers early on but their hopes of an upset were hit in the 20th minute when Ivan Saenko needlessly received a second yellow card.
Werder duly took the lead after a nice finish from Markus Rosenberg 10 minutes later and with nine minutes to go Ivan Klasnic headed in the second to seal the win.
The result saw Werder move up on to Bayern's shoulder with 40 points from 20 games. Bayern will re-establish their three-point lead if they win away to Hanover 96 on Sunday.
At the other end of the table, the Angela Merkel effect failed to materialise for Energie Cottbus, with the strugglers going down 2-0 at home to Borussia Dortmund as the German Chancellor, their newest honorary member, looked on.
Cottbus, who welcomed Merkel as member number 2008 before kick-off, fell behind to a Mladen Petric goal in the eighth minute.
Petric, the Croatian striker, grabbed his second six minutes from the end to take his season tally to 11 and move top of the Bundesliga's scoring table.
Cottbus are second from bottom with 16 points, two points ahead of Duisburg after they went down 3-2 at home to champions VfB Stuttgart.
Schalke 04 lost ground in the race for Champions League places with a 2-1 defeat at VfL Wolfsburg on Friday night but Bayer Leverkusen were not able to take full advantage.
Simon Rolfes and Stefan Kiessling gave them a 2-0 lead away to Karlsruhe with well struck goals but Sebastian Freis and Josh Kennedy responded to earn the home side a deserved point.
A draw was enough to see Leverkusen up to third place on 35 points, ahead of Schalke on goal difference.
Hamburg SV, in fifth on 34 points, will leapfrog both of them if they win at home to Bochum on Sunday.

BERLIN, Feb 23 (Reuters) - Ten-man Werder Bremen lost 1-0 at Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, handing Bayern Munich a chance to move six points clear at the top of the Bundesliga when they play on Sunday.
Werder had Brazilian Diego sent off after 40 minutes and Frankfurt took advantage with a goal from Greece striker Ioannis Amanatidis 11 minutes after the break.
Bayer Leverkusen, like Werder playing their second match in under 48 hours, showed no such signs of post-UEFA Cup fatigue as they won 1-0 at home to Schalke 04 with a wonder goal from Manuel Friedrich five minutes from time.
Friedrich took the ball infield and swept a shot over Manuel Neuer and just under the crossbar from at least 35 metres.
Schalke ended the match with 10 men after Jermaine Jones received a second booking in added time.
Bayern, who host Hamburg SV on Sunday, have 43 points from 20 games.
Werder stay second on 40 points from 21 while Leverkusen climb to third on 38. Hamburg are fourth on 37, two points ahead of Schalke.
Visiting Werder were never in any trouble in their UEFA Cup game against Portugal's Braga on Thursday, with a late goal from Ivan Klasnic clinching a 4-0 aggregate win, but the trip clearly took a lot out of them.
Coach Thomas Schaaf recalled Diego after the playmaker missed the midweek game with a groin injury and he contributed little before earning a red card in a confrontation with Amanatidis.
Diego was unhappy with a harmless enough challenge from his opponent and he jumped up and barged into the Greek striker off the ball, giving the referee an easy decision.
Frankfurt struck the only goal when Sebastian Boenisch gave the ball away on the left and Amanatidis pounced to slip a shot past the keeper.
Werder played much better with 10 than they had with 11. Klasnic was just off target with a header after an hour, Tim Borowski failed to make contact with a header from five metres and in the 77th minute Naldo nodded marginally off target.
'We just couldn't take our chances,' a frustrated Schaaf told Premiere TV. 'We had a lot of good opportunities despite losing a man and we kept on trying.'
